DJGBC Interviews: Author NeNe Capri “The Pussy Trap”

1. Where are you from?

I was raised between Newark and Orange New Jersey; I spent most of my years in Wilson place projects.

2. Tell us your latest news?

My latest book is “The Pussy Trap 2, The Kiss of Death” to come out October 2012.

3. When and why did you begin writing?

I have always wrote, I started when I was 10 years old my step-father gave me a journal for Christmas with a pen he made out of a bird feather, (smile) that was when I feel in love with the power of the pen.

4. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I will consider myself a writer when I finish law school and help write the first laws that will help woman and children whom are abused and discarded by society. I consider myself as a person who has been blessed with the ability to tell good stories and I thank the creator for this gift.

5. What inspired you to write your first book?

Wahida Clark has been my mentor since I was 18 years old. When she came home from her 9 ½ year prison bid and started her publishing company I knew I needed to add something to the brand. After reading “Sleeping with the Enemy” by her and KiKi Swinson, I told her it needed a part 2, needless to say she didn’t agree (smile). I said I got an idea, she said let me see what you got. I went home and penned a couple of pages and brought it to her, she said its good but you can’t write a story for me and put your name on it, so finish up and if it’s good I’ll give you your own contract. Three months later I had my first novel written.

6. Do you have a specific writing style?

Yes. I write in scenes. I cannot write a story from cover to cover. Once I create the charters and their personalities they take over. I allow the characters to tell their story.

7. How did you come up with the title?

It’s funny, I started to call it Hot KoKo after one of my main characters, Wahida’s daughter said well is it about a stripper? We all fell out laughing. I went home and began my edits, I fell asleep writing Kayson’s parts and in my dream he said, “Pussy is a Trap.” I woke up 3:00 in the morning and grabbed my note pad and wrote, “The Pussy Trap.” thus the concept was born.

8. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Yes. Secrets are deadly. Be careful who you cross because revenge is a dish best served cold.

9. How much of the book is realistic?

70%. The names are all people I grew up with and a lot of the scenes come from actual events.

10. Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Both. A lot of what KoKo went through as a young girl comes from my story. I was raised by my grandmother and even though she tried to be strict on me I got loose. My grandmother died when I was sixteen and the streets became my parents, after several brushes with death I cried and prayed for some deliverance and my prayers were answered when I was introduced to Wahida Clark.

11. What books have most influenced your life most?

Uncle Yah Yah by Albert Dickens. That book changed my whole outlook on life and pushed me towards wanting to aspire to be greater than I was.

12. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Wahida Clark. This is not due to the fact that she is a great writer but because she lives by the philosophy of making jobs for her people. She spear heads a non-profit organization called Prodigal Sons and Daughters in which we mentor young girls and inmates. She also has started several businesses that employ almost her whole family. That in itself is genius.

13. What book are you reading now?

Right now the only book I have time to read is my Law School Admittance Test books (LSAT). I am getting ready to enter law school so most of my time is spent preparing for that.

14. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

Of course all the young literature authors on Wahida Clark Presents label they have written very timely messages for the youth if you have a children from the age 11-18 pick them up. Also, Intelligent Allah author of Lickin License, Anthony Fields author of Ultimate Sacrifice and Mike Jefferies author of Life 4 a Life, Tammy Capri, Eyonne Williams author of Secrets Never Die, Pinky Dior she is an up and coming author on DC Book Divas label.

15. What are your current projects?

I am working on two new books that I want to finish up before I go to law school because I will be too busy to write (smile).

16. Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.

My pen. As I stated earlier I have wrote in a journal since I was ten years old. Whenever I get down, whenever I feel lost, I write. Poetry is my real love and when I get a chance to slow down I want to have my poetry published.

17. Do you see writing as a career?

Not at this point. Even though I will always write, I want to work with the youth; my real passion is to mentor our young girls. The passing on of tradition has been lost in our society, our youth are suffering and I want to help them to reclaim the definition of womanhood and that it is defined by what they have between their ears and not between their legs.

18. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Every time I read it, I want to change something. As you learn and grow in the industry you are able to see your mistakes.

19. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

Yes. When I got that first journal. I remember it like it was yesterday; it was yellow and had Ziggy on the front of it with a little lock and key. When my step-dad handed it to me I felt like he gave me some special powers (giggling). I opened it and the pages were so crisp and when I put that pen to those pages my heart skipped, thus my love was born.

20. Can you share a little of your current work with us?

“The Pussy Trap 2 The Kiss of death”, is going to be more drama, more suspense and of course more hot sex. Enemies will be revealed and scores will be settled.

21. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Yes the editing process, Wahida said I always try to rewrite the whole book.

22. Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

Albert Dickens. This author writes to heal the wounded souls and troubled mind. He uses animals like Esop as to not offend the afflicted, as he says everyone can see their self in someone else’s plight.

23. Do you to travel much promoting your book(s)?

Yes. We are usually all over the place.

24. Who designed the covers?

Davita at Oddball designs. She is a beast, love her to death.

25. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Filling in the blanks between the scenes, being as though I have a very un-orthodox writing style sometimes it is challenging to fill in the blanks.

26. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

Writing is a very challenging career but rewarding at the same time. I take my hats off to everyone who is a slave to the pen.

27. Do you have any advice for other writers?

Yes. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do this. Take your time and write from the heart.

28. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I am blessed to have real readers to bless my pages. I am humble to see that so many people enjoy my work and I thank you so much for your support.  Get ready for “The Pussy Trap 2, The Kiss of Death.” KoKo is about to go hard
