DJGBC Author Spotlight: Hope McGill “The Novelist”

About Hope McGill

10401551_10153892013927783_4714867338226935425_nHope McGill grew up in New York City’s famed neighborhood of Harlem. She began writing at the age of sixteen, but her love of literature began as a child. Reading has always been a means of escape for her. Curling up with a good book helped her to explore the world and meet fascinating people. As she grew older, her appetite for reading grew immensely and the books became more diverse. She began to read books such as, J. California Cooper’s, Life Is Short But Wide, Treasure E Blue’s, Harlem Girl Lost, Octavia Butler’s Bloodchild, as well as the classic, Manchild In The Promised Land by Claude Brown.
The excitement and joy of reading these various authors inspired her to begin writing. Her stories feature real people with real lives, real problems, and extraordinary passion. She wants her work to offer comfort in times when things don’t appear as if they are working out. Her passion for people, music, art, and life, fuel her writing. In the future, she would like to share her personal experiences with young women, by mentoring them or working with community-based programs.

hope-business-cardsQ & A with Hope The Novelist

  • What inspired you to write? I started writing short stories because I wanted to see regular characters in true to life sizes with flaws.
  • Why are you on the cover of your book? My graphic artist had a hard time finding a plus size model in photo stock. Photo stock is a collection of photos used for graphic designers. I couldn’t afford to pay for a model so I used myself.
  • Why did you use song’s as chapter titles? I am lover of good music. Music makes me feel good. It sets the mood and lays down the foundation for a good story.
  • How do you develop the characters? I like to people watch. Some of my characters have come from strangers on the street, others from past experiences.
  • What kinds of books did you love to read as a child? Okay, so this is going to sound really weird but I like my stuff juxtaposed. I would start off reading V. C Andrews and Judy Blume and then pick up a Donald Goines or Iceberg Slim novel. I had to read them in that order too…from one extreme to the next. When I listen to music it’s in the same fashion. I might start of with Sade and then flip it to MOP. My mind just sort of functions best that way.
  • Will there be a Peals Part II? Absolutely! Stay tuned.

She emerged from her kitchen, crossing in front of the windows, with a goblet of wine in hand. Victor cracked his neck, anxious for her next move. Secretly, he had been watching her for months now. Stumbling in late after a long night of partying, he was on his way to the kitchen, when he caught a glimpse of her in her living room completely naked, painting. Her free-spirited nudity captivated him. “She” was his Pearl, the nickname he had given her. The pearl necklace she wore faithfully, always hung loosely from her neck. A voluptuous, caramel beauty, she had the air of a regal African goddess. Mango-sized breasts hung naturally to her plump, round stomach. The deep arch in her back made her ass stand out as a prized stallion’s would. Victor loved to watch her ass jiggle loosely, as she casually walked around her apartment in the buff. He wanted to rub his hands across the stretch marks on each side of her hips. It was more than just the visual of her rust-colored, large areolas, or the plump vagina in between her legs. The passion and intensity displayed on her face, while she would sit in front of the easel and paint turned him on. Completely smitten by her, she was everything that he wanted in a woman and then some.

Excerpt:
Well I’ve ignored this motherfucker way past bed time, and now it was beginning to bother me a lot because now this prick was grilling me. He was making a mean ass face when he looked at me, and I was saying to Muhammad that I was tired of it. He gave me a couple of options and yard etiquette, and they were as followed.
“You can step to him and get to the bottom of it by straight up asking him what’s up? But,” Muhammad said, “Remember, we’re on The Yard.” As in many of our conversations, he was teaching me prison yard politics. He said:
“1. Everybody’s watching everybody and everything else.
2. The CO’s are doing the very same thing, that’s why they’re on the walls with guns in the first, second, and third place.
3. If you use your art, you have to win or life will become hell for you in this prison, knowing me or not; once you’re labeled a fake that’s a wrap.
4. If and when you fuck him up with Kung Fu, you get tagged by the prison as being a lethal weapon, and that means if you’re ever around any uproar of any kind, the CO’s know to approach with extreme prejudice, and handle you with maximum force no matter what, or who did what!”
